St Albans Cathedral Member Story

St Albans Cathedral is an iconic landmark in St Albans but did you know it is also a great example of sustainable practice? The Cathedral’s Eco Team have provided us with an insight into what they are doing for the environment and their upcoming events…

Net Zero Goals and Sustainability Awards

St Albans Cathedral is committed to becoming Carbon Net Zero by 2030 as part of our shared responsibility to care for God’s creation. Guided by the expertise and commitment of our Environmental Strategy Group, we have already transitioned to 100% renewable energy sources throughout the Cathedral and are in the process of implementing a comprehensive decarbonisation strategy across all of the properties held within the Cathedral precinct. We are also proud to have been awarded the A Rocha UK Silver Eco Award in recognition of our ongoing sustainability efforts.

Our Eco Team has also been busy transforming the Cathedral House Office garden, re-introducing the plant life that would have been cultivated by our medieval antecedents in the Abbey’s monastic garden, while maintaining green spaces in Sumpter Yard.

This initiative coincides with the launch of Watershed: A River’s Call to Action, an interactive art installation by artists Liz Sergeant, Laura Dekker, and Angela Mellen. The installation highlights the fragility of local river ecosystems — particularly the chalk stream of the River Ver— and the impact of pollution.

Wednesday, 28 May, 7.30–8.30pm – A Watershed Debate: What Does the Future Hold for Our Waterways? – No charge, booking required

https://www.stalbanscathedral.org/Event/a-watershed-debate-what-does-the-future-hold-for-our-waterways

Held in the Cathedral, this panel discussion will address the current challenges facing our local rivers, including the Ver and the Lea.

Our panellists include:

  • Dr Hilary Marlow, Canon Environmentalist, Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge and Trustee of A Rocha
  • Daisy Cooper, Liberal Democrat MP of St Albans
  • John Pritchard, Chair of the Ver Valley Society
