Our member the Batchwood Pickers have shared their story with us ahead of a major milestone, their 100th pick!
‘100 litter picks ago, it all started with one simple question from a child on her way to school:
“Dad, can I have a litter picker?”
Inspired by young Grace Gaskin’s request, a small group of early risers met in New Greens—and never looked back. Since then, every Saturday at 8am, rain or shine, the Saturday Pickers have come together to make a difference in their neighbourhood. One hour of litter picking, followed by coffee and pastries at Christ Church on High Oaks, has become a cherished weekend ritual.
The results are remarkable:
1,300 volunteer hours, 3,000+ bags of rubbish removed, and hundreds of bulky items—from mattresses to motorbikes—safely cleared. The group also helps spot and report fly-tipping and abandoned vehicles, keeping the area safe and clean for everyone. And the impact keeps growing.

From that original group, two more teams have formed to cover wider areas of Batchwood Ward and beyond, and the flexible ‘Walk and Pick’ scheme lets individuals borrow equipment and collect litter as part of their daily routine.
Since June 2023, 80 volunteers—including 25 children—have taken part. This is a welcoming, all-ages activity where kids have a great time, learning about care for the environment while making new friends. All litter picking equipment is provided, and it’s a good idea to bring a pair of old gloves if you have them—though we can provide some if not.
Together, these efforts have transformed New Greens into the cleanest area of St Albans, a space where wildlife thrives, children can play safely, and the community can enjoy cleaner, greener streets. So why not join us for this special milestone?
Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, everyone is welcome.
Meet at 8am on Saturday 10th May at Christ Church, AL3 6EA. Enjoy fresh air, great company, and an easy way to boost your step count—all while helping the environment. At the end of the hour, there’s the reward of a hot drink, a pastry, and the visible difference you’ve made to your neighbourhood.
Let’s make our 100th litter pick our biggest and best yet. Because when communities come together, amazing things happen—one bag at a time.’
What an incredible achievement, and so much good done for the community! If you would like to get involved check out the local litter picking Facebook groups.
