It is Earth Day! We are so grateful for the beautiful planet on which we live and the wonderful environments and ecosystems that we are a part of. We are very lucky to have beautiful green spaces in St Albans District and there is no better time than Earth Day to get outside and reconnect with nature and remind ourselves why conserving our world is so important.

Are you unsure how to get involved this Earth Day? Why not try taking some small actions to be a part of the effort. Please share these actions with us at greenertogether@stalbans.gov.uk or @stalbansgreenertogether on social media.

For some ideas of actions, you could take check out some suggestions below:

Quick + Easy Actions

  • Bring a reusable bag, water bottle, or coffee cup with you today.
  • Turn off lights and unplug electronics you’re not using.
  • Take a shorter shower — aim for under 5 minutes.
  • Skip meat for the day — or the week!
  • Pick up any pieces of litter you see on your walk or commute.
  • Share an Earth-friendly tip or fact on social media to inspire others.
  • Recycle something that’s been sitting around (batteries, tech, etc.)

Outdoor Activities

  • Start a balcony or kitchen herb garden.
  • Enjoy the local nature – check out the beautiful bluebells that are coming out across the District!
  • Walk or cycle your commute this week.

 Learn & Advocate

  • Watch a documentary on climate change or sustainability (e.g., Before the Flood, An Inconvenient Trust). Or join St Albans Greener Together’s ‘The Week’ Event and watch and discuss climate in a group experience.
  • Research local sustainable businesses that you could support.

 Eco-Friendly Swaps & Actions At Home

  • Invest in a reusable products.
  • Buy second-hand instead of new.
  • Unsubscribe from unnecessary packaging-heavy deliveries.
  • Start a “buy-nothing” challenge or join a local swap group.
  • Do a “waste audit” — check what you throw out in a day and what could be reduced.
  • Set up a compost system (even a small one indoors!).
  • Declutter and donate instead of tossing.
